My favorite story about Kali is in the Devi Mahtmyam. Durga, “Mother of the Universe,” fights a demon called Raktabija, which means “drop of blood.” Whenever Durga attacked him, each drop of Raktabija’s blood turned into a clone of himself as soon as it touched the ground. This made him very hard to defeat. Therefore, Kali leapt from the forehead of Durga licking every drop of Raktabija’s blood before it could touch the ground allowing Raktabija to be defeated. ‘The battle described here represents the internal battle of negative thoughts. Raktabija represents the mind’s ability to keep generating negative thoughts and bad habits without end. The only way to stop this proliferation is to catch each thought before it has the chance to take root in the fertile field of your unconscious.’
